OIC Yakima: Gleaning & Education Coordinator VISTA
In Yakima, WA, Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is a multi-service nonprofit community action agency that operates a food bank, distribution center, and community center. Established in 1971, OIC strives to eliminate unemployment, poverty, illiteracy, and racism so that all people can live with greater human dignity. The Yakima Valley is one of the largest agricultural hubs in the United States and utilizes the AmeriCorps VISTA member’s capacity to nurture and grow OIC of Washington’s gleaning and farmer network. This program includes visiting farms across the Valley to secure surplus for the OIC Food Bank and distribution center. In this position, Opportunities Industrialization Center partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable, community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges and management related to food supply chain, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and growing organizations through story-telling, development, and fundraising. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger and the Harvest VISTA Program aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.

Member Duties : In the role of Gleaning & Education Coordinator VISTA, the AmeriCorps member will continue to analyze, develop, and finalize the model for produce recovery and farmer engagement in the Yakima region. As part of this plan, the AmeriCorps member will refine systems for sustainable community-based volunteer management, engagement, and recruitment. They will expand a grower outreach plan to introduce the gleaning program to area farmers for their support, build relationships with partner farms, and strengthen and continue to grow partnerships with other local and regional hunger relief efforts. They will then strengthen community outreach to increase OIC program awareness in the Yakima community using the knowledge and connections acquired. The member will work to develop a sustainability plan for the gleaning and produce recovery program, farmer network, and volunteer program.
