Gleaning & Education Coordinator: Yakima OIC

In Yakima, WA, Harvest Against Hunger (HAH) partners with the OIC, a multi-service nonprofit community action agency that operates a food bank and distribution center. The Harvest VISTA will assess community interest and needs, strengthen community outreach & development, build a robust volunteer recruitment and management system and increase farmer engagement and produce recovery support in order to expand area gleaning capacity. Captured produce through the gleaning effort will be distributed through the local hunger response network to benefit individuals and families in need who may live at or below federal levels of poverty. HAH is the program incubator and catalyst, utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA who build sustainable community food security programs. VISTAs serve with their projects for a year, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges related to supply chain management, and creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. HAH projects also aim to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.
