Associate, VISTA Horizons Student Enrichment Program-DMV

This is an opportunity for motivated, committed individuals who are passionate about making a difference and receiving beyond entry-level responsibilities. Because of this, the candidate should have some background of volunteer service as well as the desire to take on responsibilities that will challenge themselves and make an impact on the community. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, low-income students are six times more likely to drop out of high school and fewer than one third of them will enroll in college. Additionally, a 6th grade student who misses more than 20% of class, whose teacher reports poor behavior, or who fails math or English is 70% more likely to drop out. The current high school dropout rate is a primary contributor to stagnating U.S. economic mobility and results in over $300 billion in lost wages, taxable income, and health care, welfare and incarceration costs. While states and the nation are trying to produce workers with skills to master new technologies and adapt to complexities of a global economy, school budgets have become tighter than ever. Despite these trends among low-income students, Horizons students boast a 99% high school graduation rate (compared to an 80% graduation rate among their peers) and, of these Horizons graduates, 91% go on to college or some form of postsecondary training. Horizons Delmarva provides a six-week Summer Learning Program as well as academic and enrichment activities throughout the year for low-income students attending Wicomico and Worcester County Public Schools. This wraparound service directly supports in-school academic success while providing additional character and cultural opportunities that support personal growth. Parental involvement, a requirement of the program, helps create a supportive academic environment for our students and support for Horizons events.
