Oregon Health Authority EMS & Trauma Systems Program VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://healthoregon.org/vista. Selections are made on a rolling basis and early applications are strongly encouraged. The Oregon Health Authority Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Trauma Systems program develops and regulates systems for quality emergency medical care in Oregon. The program mission is to ensure EMS Providers are fully trained, that ambulances are properly equipped, and emergency medical systems are functioning efficiently and effectively. The EMS and Trauma Systems program greatly impacts people that live at or below the poverty line, as this population is more likely to utilize emergency medical services than non-economically disadvantaged populations. The EMS program assures the delivery of prehospital care through the coordination of first response agencies, ambulances, and related entities such as public safety communications centers. The Trauma program consists of designated hospitals providing specialized trauma care, a network of state and regional advisory boards on trauma care, and a comprehensive monitoring and a quality assurance program. This position also includes professional development and access to an onsite wellness center. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health. The OHA VISTA Partnership Project is committed to building a diverse workforce. We strongly encourage candidates from communities of color, disability, LGBTQIA, and linguistically diverse populations to consider application to our positions.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work with county officials and local emergency medical services (EMS) agency staff to improve access and sustainability of this essential healthcare service that connects low-income community members to health care. The VISTA will continue to build and establish new partnerships, bridge EMS agency gaps through the provision of resources and promising practices, and address rural disparities in health at the county level by providing tools with the intent of increasing access to the right care at the right time for vulnerable populations. The member will also compile the challenges, successes and results of the pilot project into a step-by-step process to inform OHA EMS staff who will expand the outreach to the remaining Oregon counties. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve their communities through indirect service. While your projects will endure for years, you will have limited interaction with clients and will be based in an office setting.
