Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps 2021-2022

1 in 5 adults in Texas can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application, and less than 5% of these adults have access to educational services to meet their needs. Become part of the TFLA team – learn, develop and contribute by helping people in need to build essential literacy skills. AmeriCorps members can serve in Austin or Houston, and we offer a significant range of education-focused national service opportunities that make a substantial difference in addressing individuals' literacy needs across our region. For members interested in serving and teaching adults they will be able to teach/tutor English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) (basic reading and writing), and GED and workforce literacy (skills to obtain and keep a job). For individuals interested in serving with children and families, members deliver family literacy programs for parents and children (under age 5). All programs are based on a research-validated curriculum and are operated with/through our network of 40+ community-based nonprofit partners. Members are matched with local nonprofits to: 1. Teach classes or tutor adults in ESL, ABE, or GED classes. 2. Provide Workforce Literacy for adults seeking to improve their employment and careers. 3. Provide early childhood interventions and enrichment activities to children through the PALS coaching parents program. Members also participate in team meetings, professional development, community service, and team-building activities. Members receive a range of training, tools, an education award, and great nonprofit networking opportunities as well as practical experience. You will gain important work skills and opportunities for leadership. Service is a great pathway into well-established local non-profit networks as well as an achievable path to build your professional experience and skills to launch your career.
