EMBARC Social Media Marketing Assistant VISTA

In addition to fleeing violence and persecution, Burmese refugee groups who have relocated to Iowa face the daunting task of integrating into their new communities and achieving self-sufficiency. The challenge is complicated by difficulties with meeting basic needs like food and shelter, language and literacy barriers, and histories filled with both first-hand and vicarious trauma. Most of the nearly 10,000 refugee newcomers resettled to Iowa are living in poverty as they learn English and seek living-wage work. Nearly all are among the nearly 23% of Central Iowans who live at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. (https://www.unitedwaydm.org/blog/10-facts-you-should-know-about-poverty-in-greater-des-moines). EMBARC assists with integration and self-sufficiency by providing linguistically and culturally responsive support services for newcomers that helps them access the social safety net and achieve self-sufficiency. Recently, EMBARC has begun to expand services to other refugee and immigrant groups, which collectively make up 5.4% of Iowa’s population (U.S. Census). Nearly 23% of Central Iowans live at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.
