NYS Commission For the Blind Program Development VISTA
 
 
 
This assignment is part of the New York State COVID-19 Response Project, which builds the capacity of several state agencies to improve employment, food security, and economic opportunity outcomes for New Yorkers dealing with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) is the host agency. The selected candidate will have a unique learning experience of working to enhance and assist the lives of legally blind NYS residents, while gaining and sharpening skills in research, outreach, developing and administering a new college program, marketing and advertising. The VISTA with NYSCB will assist with developing an outreach program to help identify and respond to food, transportation, and housing insecurity within the blind community during the COVID pandemic. The VISTA will also be part of a team in developing a paraprofessional program in partnership with Empire State College, to train Vision Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants (VRTA's) and Orientation and Mobility Assistant's (OMA's). The VISTA will also assist to promote the program and recruit students. The selected candidate will be located at the home office of the NYS Commission for the Blind at 52 Washington Street, Rensselaer, NY. Workdays will be core hours, Monday through Friday, with all state holidays off. Desired Qualifications: • Course work in writing, grant requests, computers, advertising/marketing or research, a plus • Excellent computer, internet and social media skills • Research and analytical skills • Strong reporting and spreadsheet creation skills • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills • Experience in writing grants or related, equivalent writing experience and willingness to learn • No prior blindness experience necessary. Member Duties : • Create and conduct a survey to identify the needs of blind residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. • Develop a list of regional resources across New York State to meet the needs of blind residents. • Coordinate resources and information within regions to distribute to service providers and participants. • Write grants to support the VRTA and OMA paraprofessional programs. • Identify marketing opportunities and ideas for promotion of paraprofessional program, in partnership along with NYSCB and Empire State College. • Create promotional materials and advertisements using social media, internet and print media. • Organize training of paraprofessional program students at NYSCB service agencies, through recruitment of trainers at service agencies. • Gather VRTA and OMA postgraduate information using survey and questionnaire tools to develop a report to address their experiences with regards to gaining employment, education experience, utilization of skills, and any unmet needs.
