AmeriCorps Guahan Sustainable Culture
 
 
 
AmeriCorps Guahan Sustainable Culture's (GSC) mission is to provide services to improve healthy lifestyles, increase food security and food sovereignty on Guam, increase environmental awareness and stewardship through the creation of the Community Garden Project and the organization of a Sustainable Cultures Workshop Series, including disaster services knowledge and awareness about the importance of disaster readiness, and capacity building activities through educational training, workshops, outreaches and presentations. AmeriCorps members will be responsible for GSC’s Community Gardens Project and GSC’s Sustainable Cultures Workshop Series as part of the AmeriCorps GSC's Healthy Futures and Environmental stewardship focus areas. These will be effective solutions to childhood obesity, food insecurity and monitoring of unsustainable environmental practices. In the Community Gardens Project, AmeriCorps GSC members will have trained community beneficiaries through GSC’s workshops on healthy lifestyles, including gardening and cooking skills in addition to the creation of a community garden project. In the Sustainable Culture Workshop Series, AmeriCorps GSC members will have increased knowledge in food security and sustainable methods to promote a healthy lifestyle, agriculture with focus on improvement of traditional farming. Workshops will also include hydroponics, aquaculture, chicken raising and other efficient and environmentally sustainable methods of food production. AmeriCorps GSC members will also provide agricultural knowledge to community beneficiaries who need more information in starting small scale gardens and farms including addressing insufficient resources regarding reliable access to nutritious and affordable foods. AmeriCorps GSC members will have been trained in, disaster services including pandemic in readiness to prepare, respond, recover and mitigate with acquisition and preservation of food security.

Member Duties : AmeriCorps GSC members will be responsible for engaging community beneficiaries in environmental conscious practices and or stewardship through agricultural educational workshops, meetings, and outreaches that teach different methods of sustainable food production to help reduce negative human and environmental impact including hands on learning about how to grow their own food. AmeriCorps GSC members will engage in Healthy Futures activities through the development of community gardens, conducting workshops and outreaches that focus on eating fresh local foods and healthy eating habits.Members will receive and provide disaster service training to beneficiaries on how to prepare, respond, recover and mitigate natural disasters including pandemic outbreaks. Members will engage with 2 organizations to provide capacity building services to increase their efficiency and effectiveness at the organization level and the recruitment, training and managing of volunteers from the community.
