TSC VISTA 2021: Coalition for Economic Justice

The Service Collaborative (TSC) VISTA Program mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to function in organizations, government agencies and educational institutions. Members focus on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all and creating healthy futures for the residents of low-income communities. Our goals are to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Service Collaborative VISTA program has partner organizations in New York State and across the country. During their term of service members will receive support from our VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY. Our support includes monthly trainings, a social network of fellow members and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The Coalition for Economic Justice (CEJ) was founded around a collaborative effort of labor, faith, and community members. CEJ works to advance economic justice by building power to raise standards for workers and communities while deepening partnerships, especially with organizations based in communities of color. Currently, one of CEJ’s campaigns is the Buffalo Mutual Aid Network (BMAN). BMAN is a social action group for peer to peer organizing, humanitarian assistance, and reliable information sharing, initially formed in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The VISTA will research and implement best practices to build a more sustainable model for BMAN. This will include establishing networks/pods across the city that would be self-sustaining and led by community members. The VISTA will develop a strategy for volunteer recruitment, training, and program evaluation. The VISTA will also engage in grant research/writing and assist in developing social media and education materials.
