Alaska: Ketchikan Afterschool Program

Help youth to develop resilience, mastery of skills, and foster healthy connections with our community, arts & culture. Serve afterschool and in the summer with fun & educational activities in Alaska’s warmest region, a seaside town located in a temperate rainforest, with ample attractions & amenities; normally hosting a million tourists a year. The Ketchikan Afterschool Program (KAP) is a new island-wide initiative whose goal is to support afterschool programs open to all youth grades 5th-8th. KAP is dedicated to enhancing resiliency, building protective factors, providing SAFE activities, teaching healthy lifestyles, and fostering positive youth development. AmeriCorps members will provide free services open to local students. KAP offers fun, enriching and healthy options for kids - youth are offered healthy snacks and a choice of three activities a day, such as STEM activities, arts, student clubs, outdoor education, and athletic options. Youth are taught bi-weekly lessons discussing healthy lifestyles and marijuana education. Members teach youth tobacco prevention in schools and lead youth volunteers in support of local events such as health fairs, summits, tournaments, art shows and substance mis-use events offered by local coalitions. During the summer, KAP runs a 10-week youth enrichment camp which includes activities such as hiking, kayaking, fishing, and shelter building, all within a framework of outdoor education. Indoor activities are also offered in the summer, including music, drama, art, service and STEM projects. Finally, KAP focuses on family and community engagement – providing culturally responsive free parenting classes, parent nights, open house events, and other special events for the community throughout the year. BENEFITS: Monthly Stipend ($1,650), relocation (up to $600), Health Coverage, childcare assistance if eligible, and Education Award upon completion of service (up to $6,195) Training, and monthly housing assistance ($150+).
