Stewards VISTA: Mountain Roots PR, Marketing, & Community

Mountain Roots is a Community Food Systems initiative to build a sustainable food system involves work across at the intersection of several components of the system: education and culture, food production, food security, economic development, and community engagement. Community-driven initiatives at Mountain Roots include a district-wide Farm to School Program, Sustainable Agriculture Program (including a 2-acre farm, 4 hydroponic farms, six community gardens, and a 120-member grower’s cooperative CSA), and Food Security Program (food rescue, Cooking Matters, Giving Garden, and more). Actively engaging community members in increasing organic food production simultaneously builds food security, improves community health, and promotes active conservation of our water and land. The VISTA joins a small and passionate team who take a holistic approach to conduct and integrate work across all these efforts. As Mountain Roots enters its 11th year, the need arises to intentionally design and activate public relations, marketing, and community engagement strategies that facilitate communication, interaction, involvement, and exchange between the organization and the community for a range of social and organizational outcomes. We want to raise awareness about food systems issues, like environment and hunger. We want to engage more people in dialogue, to better understand experiences, perceptions, and context of these issues, and to facilitate stronger relationships among community members, creating a platform from which community members feel motivated to organize for social change. In addition to issue-based community education, we see a need to strengthen our messaging and branding, streamline and organize our marketing for programs and products, and to improve and personalize our communication with donors, members, volunteers, and partner organizations. Therefore, PR, Marketing, Branding, and Communication are essential skills in this role.
