The University of New England (UNE) is the Implementing Agency for Maine Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (Maine SNAP-Ed), administered by the Office for Family Independence (OFI) at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services with funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). Maine SNAP-Ed aims to improve the likelihood that individuals eligible for the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA food guidance.

Member Duties : The activities of the VISTA Maine Nutrition Action Coordinator will build capacity in Maine to impact lifelong healthy eating for 180,000 Mainers receiving SNAP benefits and the nearly 200,000 Mainers affected by food insecurity, including 1 in 5 children and 1 in 3 senior adults. This will be achieved by supporting the Maine State Nutrition Action Council (SNAC) partner organizations in identifying, coordinating and implementing initiatives that are intended to improve food security, nutrition, and health for low-income Mainers; by identifying and coordinating with partner healthcare organizations across Maine to implement the Hunger Vital Signs™ (HVS) nationally validated screening tool to address food insecurity in clinical settings; by coordinating with agriculture organizations across Maine to improve access to healthy food; and by working with Maine SNAP-Ed to craft and promote relevant food and nutrition social marketing messages impacting low-income Mainers.
