LA's BEST Alumni VISTA Fellow

The mission of LA's BEST Afterschool Enrichment Program is to provide a safe and supervised afterschool education, enrichment and recreation program for children ages five to 12 in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley created LA's BEST in 1988 in response to challenges arising from increasing numbers of unsupervised children throughout the City during out of school time, especially within under resourced Los Angeles neighborhoods that are disproportionately impacted by high rates of poverty and crime. LA's BEST has grown from operating at 10 Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school sites to 200. Since the organizations inception, LAs BEST has provided about 400,000 elementary students with out of school time learning experiences within safe, stable and stimulating environments to ensure short term and long term academic and social success. Since 1988, LAs BEST has brought more than $400 million in public and private dollars to the City of Los Angeles, with a significant percentage used for salaries of youth development community staff hired from neighborhoods in which the children served by the organization reside.

Member Duties : The Alumni VISTA Fellow will work with the LA’s BEST Development team to create and execute a plan to gather contact information from LA’s BEST alumni, and engage alumni in current organizational activities. The VISTA will organize alumni focus groups to document feedback about alumni's experiences in LA's BEST for quality improvement purposes; addressing the needs of the service demographic and help to move participants out of poverty. The VISTA will visit LA's BEST sites (when possible) and interview various program stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, teachers, and alumni documenting the impact of LA's BEST on their lives and within their communities. Resulting anecdotal material will help the organization's development team better convey the power of LA's BEST to both internal and external audiences.
