* BMVP - Expand & Diversify Youth Mentorship Opportunities

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yellowstone County’s (BBBSYC) mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Mentorship programs between mentors and mentees, or “Bigs” and “Littles” support the stability and growth of youth. Over 100 youth in Yellowstone County are served currently; however, there is a need for expansion in BBBSYC’s other service areas. According to 2019 Census data, Yellowstone County’s poverty rate is approximately 10.9%, while surrounding counties including Carbon County and Big Horn County have both higher poverty and higher unemployment rates. Research shows that children exposed to issues related to poverty are “more likely to be affected by challenges with mental health and … mental health problems often impair overall academic achievement and the ability of children to succeed in school.” A recent study also found that 47% of parents reported increased emotional or behavioral problems in children since the onset of the current pandemic. Experiences of low-income families and children are continually impacted by an increasingly uncertain job market, arising new health concerns, and the implementation of alternative schooling methods. Nevertheless, studies indicate a multitude of educational, behavioral, and developmental benefits of ongoing mentoring relationships. New evidence even suggests that “natural mentors may be instrumental in providing long-term economic benefits for youth...” By diversifying and increasing these opportunities, youth across southern Montana will have increased access to high quality, stable mentorships in order to give them the toolset they need to grow into well-balanced adults.
