Sunset Park AmeriCorps Reach Out & Read
 
 
 
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based, research-validated early childhood literacy, parenting, and school readiness program at various clinical sites at NYU FHC serving low-income patients from a variety of cultures and ethnicities. The program is structured with 3 main components: 1) volunteer readers in clinic waiting rooms; 2) parent education on the importance of literacy and healthy development; and 3) distribution of new, developmentally and culturally appropriate books by medical providers during well child visits. Our AmeriCorps members make an impact by increasing access to care for patients with cultural, linguistic, or health literacy barriers. They allow for seamless services for patient care, an increase in patient compliance and follow-up and Improved health outcomes overall Full time NYU Langone Sunset Park AmeriCorps members receive a living Allowance of $23,000, as well an Education Award of $7,395.
