Stewards VISTA: Kentucky Headwaters, Inc.

Headwaters Inc. is a non-profit community watershed organization in Letcher County, Kentucky. In response to water-quality concerns, community members formed Headwaters in 2005 to promote local water resource management and encourage stewardship of Letcher County waterways. After incorporation, Headwaters gained 501(c)3 nonprofit status in 2008. Since the founding of the organization, Headwaters has been led by an operating board of professionals from various parts of the county. Today, Headwaters works to address public health issues relating to water quality through water monitoring, environmental education, and ecological restoration. Our specific program activities include sampling stream water at designated locations throughout the year, conducting in-home tap water testing in partnership with the University of Kentucky, and community engagement through Letcher County school system and in partnership with other local nonprofits around clean water issues. Headwaters also holds regular stream cleanups and supports Headwaters on the Creek Summer Camp at Cowan Community Center, which serves under-resourced local youth and families. Community Program Coordinator VISTA member will work to this end by developing Headwaters community programming relating to these topics. VISTA member will develop processes to recruit, train, and work with a volunteer base for conducting programming; develop environmental education in local schools; assist in development and fundraising activities; and assist in partner-led work as needed. This project will engage community members in citizen monitoring activities, empower youth through education on water health, and collaborate with eco-tourism efforts as a means for increasing community knowledge and public safety in a region with low levels of environmental education.
