ReBuild NJ Fall 2014

Rebuild NJ is specifically designed to integrate trained, supported AmeriCorps Members as effective Site Leaders, guiding unskilled volunteers in the repair and rebuilding of homes impacted by Superstorm Sandy throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Rebuild NJ will create the infrastructure to engage thousands of volunteers in the reconstruction of damaged homes. Each Member will serve as the on-site Site Leader, guiding a group of 4-8 volunteers through reconstruction activities at his/her assigned house. Members will lead volunteers through activities such as demolition, gutting, insulation, drywall installation, mudding, painting, and flooring. Before any Member leads in any specific activity, she/he will have been trained by the Construction Volunteer Manager and certified as proficient to supervise volunteers in this capacity. Members will only lead those activities where they can effectively transform volunteers’ energy and desire to help into real change in homes. All of the homes on which Members and the volunteers they lead will work will be from the vast pool of damaged properties where the cost to repair without volunteers’ help exceeds the capacity of the homeowner to make the repairs. As a result, dozens of families who would remain displaced will move into their homes. Without this AmeriCorps project, efforts will be reduced to what the Construction Volunteer Manager can accomplish directly supervising volunteers. Members will increase this capacity exponentially.
