After-School All-Stars, LA Program Initiative & Events VISTA

Founded in 2003, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) mission is to educate, enlighten, and inspire young people by providing exciting and dynamic opportunities for their success, while cultivating students’ self-esteem, leadership and respect for one another to help build healthier communities. To best prepare our students for long-term success, we offer activities ranging from academics and high school, college and career readiness, to arts, athletics, and STEM enrichment activities. We provide free, comprehensive after-school programs to over 14,000 youth across over 50 schools. We are the local chapter in the ASAS National network, which serves over 90,000 youth across 19 chapters. ASAS-LA focuses on those who need us most; Of the students we serve, 99% are youth of color, and 89% qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Program, an indicator of household poverty. Our VISTA will help our organization as we continue to transition our work from in-person classes into virtual classroom spaces. This work is extremely important since our schools are located in Los Angeles county, a high risk area for Covid-19, and will most likely remain remote. ASAS-LA has 4 National Initiatives (Sports As A Hook, Career Exploration Opportunities, Life Service Action, and We Are Ready) that are vital to the work we do everyday. Our VISTA will create curriculum for the National Initiatives which will have a lasting impact in our program as we re-teach these lessons each year. Our VISTA will also develop a training plan for the front-line staff to execute each curriculum. Each Initiative has 1-2 organizational-wide events that our VISTA will design and build out while collaborating with the Leadership Team. The events bring our students and staff together as an Allstars Family and are highly anticipated by our school administration, teachers, parents, staff and students.
