Maker Fellowship VISTA at Sierra CC_2

The Makers + Mentors Network (MMN), a STEM initiative of Citizen Schools, is partnering with community colleges, school districts, and historically black colleges and universities to launch the new Maker Fellows program. This Maker Fellow position is located in Rocklin, CA and is hosted by Sierra College. The Sierra Joint Community College District is a single college, multi-campus institution of public higher education serving Placer and Nevada County and parts of Sacramento and El Dorado County. The College meets the workforce needs of both urban and rural economies, preparing students for high-wage jobs in construction, advanced manufacturing, public safety, nursing, I.T., entrepreneurship, and more. Students are also prepared for transfer to universities to pursue Baccalaureate and higher degrees. Sierra’s Maker Fellows will leverage the Sierra Makerspaces network and community-building tools to support education equity outcomes for K-12 students. Maker Fellows efforts will focus on two primary objectives: 1) Use the power of the makerspace and entrepreneurial ecosystem to engage and empower students in authentic learning experiences that enable them to develop innovative skills, explore careers and make an impact; and 2) Build instructional capacity to develop interdisciplinary curriculum that teaches the innovation, maker and entrepreneurial mindset. As a Maker Fellow, you will be joining a cohort of 28 AmeriCorps VISTA members placed at leading organizations across the country and participate in a year-long structured and collaborative learning pathway. Benefits include a living stipend of $15,035.80/year, a $400/month housing stipend, a Segal Education Award of $6,195 upon successful completion or end of year cash stipend of $1,800, healthcare coverage, and child care subsidy. Member Duties : This program will connect K-12 students to maker-centered learning opportunities that help students build the academic and social emotional skills key to their success in school, postsecondary enrollment and workforce placement. Maker Fellows, through service in their local communities and participation in targeted professional development, will become life-long leaders and champions of maker-centered learning and mentorship for under-served students. Maker-centered learning provides a unique chance for students to explore the real world through designing, hacking, building, and experimenting, through the use of digital design and fabrication technologies and makerspaces. Fellows work in capacity building roles and support direct program implementation, such as developing and enhancing new maker-centered learning programming, partnering with school districts to redesign high school CTE pathways and supporting the development of local communities of practice for faculty and educators.
