4-H VISTA - Calhoun County

This position is part of a larger project to increase capacity and the ability to reach youth specifically in rural areas of the state characterized by high poverty rates, low high school graduation rates, poor health rankings and other social challenges. Georgia 4-H, part of the world's largest youth development organization, is preparing the citizens of tomorrow by building youth/adult partnerships, providing youth with service learning opportunities, and giving youth essential experiences. The successful candidate will have an office in Tifton but will serve the needs of Calhoun County. Travel support to Calhoun County will be provided. Reliable transportation is needed to serve in this role. VISTA members will serve alongside the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension personnel, building capacity for local 4-H programs. In this role, you will play a key part in developing a stronger organizational infrastructure and sustainability through fund development, volunteer outreach, marketing and public relations. Throughout the year-long journey, the VISTA member will gain invaluable experience and keen insight into the operational aspects of a nonprofit organization supported on the county, state and national level. You will also have the opportunity to work with VISTA members across Georgia who are committed to serving youth in the most impoverished areas of our state.

Member Duties : Member will report to office in Tifton, travel to Calhoun Co. as needed. Duties: develop educational resources/systems to recruit and retain new 4-H members, enhance public relations, promote/recruit volunteer participation/certification, fundraise to benefit Calhoun Co. 4-H Clubs and support Healthier Together Calhoun community coalition. The coalition is working to create walking trails, community gardens and increase educational opportunities to reduce obesity and chronic disease rates in the county. Four small towns (Arlington, Morgan, Leary and Edison) host annual events: Horse Show, 65 Mile yard sale, Christmas Parade, Grape Stomp/Wine Festival and more. Calhoun County population is approximately 6,300; economically driven by agriculture, small town businesses, state prison, Pataula Charter Academy, and Calhoun County School System.
