Tribal Reslience VISTA: TCU Ilisagvik College

Ilisagvik College Cooperative Extension serves the community of Barrow and 7 remote villages that comprise the North Slope Borough, a region situated entirely above the Arctic Circle. The local population is 70% Iñupiat and villages are 90%. Although villages are modern communities, the traditional way of life, including hunting, fishing, and whaling remain essential to the culture and economy. However, with modernization, villagers have come to rely heavily on store-bought food, replacing comparatively healthy and nutrient-rich traditional subsistence foods with store-bought foods high in sugar, calories, and unhealthy fats while low in necessary nutrients. Recent surveys indicate that younger residents have higher reliance on non-traditional market foods than older residents. Finally, during informal interviews conducted in 5 of the villages, community stakeholders repeatedly commented on the lack of cooking skills possessed by a majority of the younger generation. The Healthy Futures program is an opportunity to address the needs of village stakeholders and increase knowledge of healthy food options. The VISTA will develop and implement a nutrition and beginning cooking program. The VISTA will incorporate community feedback and village collaboration to create a relevant and attractive curriculum. The collaboration should create joint ownership and build a strong foundation for the program to continue after the VISTA has completed service. The primary focus will be nutrition counseling, basic cooking classes (where participants will have hands on practice preparing simple nutritious meals), and basic budgeting. Healthy Futures serves ages 5-25 in the North Slope Borough. Healthy Futures addresses the needs of village residents, providing youth / young adults with the skills and knowledge to access healthy and culturally appropriate foods. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.

Member Duties : In year3 the VISTA will intensively outreach to locate and recruit volunteers and agency partners who can implement the program. These volunteers could include teacher and heath care providers, as well as village leaders. The VISTA will provide support tovolunteers and adjunct instructors teaching the program who were recruited in year2. The VISTA will encourage volunteers to utilize a variety of delivery methods to implement the program (including in-person, teleconference, or video conference) according to each community’s desired preference. During this 3rd year, participants will continue to provide feedback to ensure that the program reflects local values and that there is an acceptable balance between traditional subsistence foods and western store-bought foods available within the program’s curriculum. Finally, in the final 6 months of the project the VISTA will begin to phase out their involvement and encourage the volunteers and community stakeholders to take ownership.
