UKWC Community Coordinator, Housing Justice Project

The Housing Justice Project uses volunteer attorneys and legal assistants to provide emergency legal representation for people at risk of eviction. We often meet our clients for the first time on the day of their eviction hearing and we may not have contact with them again. However, our clients present with needs that are broader than eviction defense, such as cognitive disabilities, limited English proficiency, health care challenges, financial literacy limitations, lack of food security, and work training needs. While we always strive to understand and work with our clients in a holistic manner, our volunteer attorneys often do not have the time or knowledge to help each client with the full set of challenges they face. The Community Coordinator will address this challenge by forming strong connections with partner organizations in order to help our clients access other resources available in the community. Through these connections the Community Coordinator will ensure that our community partners understand the work of HJP and make referrals to our services early in the eviction process. With early intervention we can often prevent an eviction. There are many other benefits of eviction prevention such as avoiding credit blemishes, preventing homelessness, and preserving stability for the families we serve.
