College Health Corps VISTA, Community Dental Care (MNCC)

The Community Dental Care mission is to ensure equal access to quality dental care and preventive education for all. As a community clinic serving low-income and minority people, we provide a full range of clinical services, preventive education programs and training for dental professionals. Of the 47,000 patients seen at our two Twin City clinics last year, 83% were on public programs and 80% were a minority. In December 2012, we opened a new six-chair clinic with a staff of 15 in Rochester, MN. Since opening, we have experienced a tremendous demand for services, providing treatment for over 45 patients a day with 93% of these on public programs. We are currently booked five weeks out! This overwhelming response has left our staff little opportunity to connect with other health care providers in the community or to develop programs to improve oral health care for our new patients. A VISTA will help our CDC-Rochester clinic fill this gap. The position will be responsible for leading a number of activities that will help us meet two goals—to increase access to oral health care services and to increase knowledge of health and oral health for low-income and minority communities. The challenge will be to adapt processes, new services and new programming to the extremely high needs of low-income minority and immigrant communities from Rochester and surrounding areas, and to develop materials that are culturally and linguistically appropriate to different levels of health literacy.
