College Health Corps VISTA, Gardening Matters (MNCC)

Gardening Matters grows the success and sustainability of community gardens by supporting the gardeners that make them happen. We connect gardeners with resources, training, and networking opportunities; provide public education; advocate for supportive community garden policies; and build community and regional collaboration for the Good Food movement. We embrace home gardening and community gardening as a vital part of a diverse, community-based food system. The VISTA would work primarily with the Local Food Resource Hubs, which are neighborhood gardening networks that connect residents and organizations to support each other in growing, cooking and preserving garden produce, to increase community and individual health and access to fresh food. The Hubs create real opportunities for people to participate in healthier eating and active living through a community-based support system. The program provides seeds and seedlings, education and events, and a community of peer support. In our second year of the Local Food Resource Hubs, we had over 700 family and organizational members, reaching over 3,000 people. Neighborhoods where Local Food Resource Hubs are located are among the most socially, physically, and economically challenged communities in the Metro, with very diverse populations, high rates of health disparities, high home foreclosure rates, and high federal poverty levels. Many have limited access to food and limited transportation options. The VISTA will focus on integrating physical activity, health education and health care resource connection, and nutritional information into this growing supportive network. Key activities include establishing greater partnerships with health care providers to connect with members, enhancing the nutritional education components, providing key health messaging into communications with Hubs members, and creatively integrating health demonstrations and educational activities into Hubs events and celebrations.
