College Health Corps VISTA, CARE Clinic (MNCC)

The CARE Clinic mission is to improve the health of our community by providing primary health care access, connection to resources and health education to uninsured low-income individuals. The integrated clinic, located in Red Wing, Minnesota, operates weekly. Every Tuesday, our 200 volunteers provide the following services: 1. High-quality health care to approximately 25-35 patients per clinic session. Services include: a)Medical Care: Acute, chronic and preventative services b)Mental health assessment, treatment and referral c)Dental care for urgent needs 2. Free prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to our patients through our partnership with local pharmacies and through the Patient Assistance Programs 3. Facilitation of patient referrals and connections to local, state, and federal resources The CARE Clinic ensures that no patient is denied service because of their inability to pay. Some of the patients only need us for a short time as they may be between jobs and only utilize the clinic’s services to help bridge the gap. Other patients have a more permanent need for a health care home, and we work with them to secure needed medications, manage chronic illnesses and improve health. An Americorps Volunteer and Community Partnership Development Coordinator will allow the clinic to increase both access to the clinic and financial sustainability of the clinic through the development of relationships with community employers. Healthy employees are desired by employers, and by partnering with the CARE Clinic, the clinic and employers can work together to either enroll employees on insurance plans or provide direct patient care. The VISTA coordinator will also be given the task of creating new affiliations and strengthening current relationships with community partners. Communicating with and coordinating the clinic’s 200+ volunteers is rewarding work and will be incorporated in the Americorps Coordinator’s position.
