College Health Corps VISTA, City of Minneapolis (MNCC)

The Minneapolis Health Department (MHD) is the public health department for the City of Minneapolis. The mission of the health department is “To promote health equity in Minneapolis and meet the unique needs of our urban population by providing leadership and fostering partnerships.” MHD has a long-term commitment to improving adolescent health through its School Based Clinics Program. MHD operates clinics in six Minneapolis public high schools and one alternative school for pregnant and parenting teens to provide early intervention services that are age-appropriate, convenient and barrier-free. Services include integrated primary and mental health care. Adolescence is a time of great physical, social, emotional, and developmental change and teens face a variety of health issues related to their physical and mental health. Poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity among teens are widespread and often go overlooked until they progress to significant and costly problems such as obesity or other chronic diseases. Teens also face a disproportionately higher risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and teens that become pregnant are less likely to graduate high school. Reducing teen pregnancy, STIs, and obesity are priorities for the School Based Clinics Program. The VISTA will address a variety of health issues identified by teens through a collaborative, youth engagement and health promotion initiative. The VISTA will focus on developing projects that promote youth health and wellness and increase access to health care services through continued efforts with the School Based Clinics Program (SBC). The goals are to engage youth in health promotion activities, improve access to health care services for underserved youth, establish ongoing health education outreach in the high school setting, and formalize partnerships with a variety of school and community stakeholders.
