*Goodwill VISTA* Friends of Aroostook, Houlton

Friends of Aroostook is a non-profit, located in Houlton, Maine, providing locally grown fresh produce for Maine’s hungry, emergency winter firewood for the cold in Aroostook and Washington Counties, and helping senior citizens in the Greater Houlton area with their effort to remain in their homes. FOA began in 2008 to assist Aroostook County’s elderly and low income residents. Many residents in Maine live in households that are unable to consistently provide nutritious food necessary for a health life and some of these same households cannot heat their homes in the winter. We recognize the need for “Green Space” in our area for the general public. FOA believes in connecting local resources with local needs. The USDA has classified most of Northern and Eastern Rural Maine as a “Food Desert”. A Food Desert is a geographical area where people do not have proper access to food due to mobility, lack of in-come, and the distances to food outlets. Currently we grow produce on our farm in Houlton. This includes planting, maintaining, and harvesting multiple types of fruits and vegetables. Plus packing and delivering it to our affiliated food distributors. We serve 23 food pantries in Aroostook and Washington Counties. These food pantries define need, qualify consumers, and provide direct distribution to the hungry in their areas. Our total food pantry service area encompasses a 130 mile radius. Friends of Aroostook is leasing and area farm with option to purchase that includes 44 acres of farmland and 106 acres of forest. Currently we farm the land and are developing a 2 and ½ mile nature trail system to create “Green Space” for the general public. This system is nature friendly and by design the visible foot print is not intrusive to the land. http://www.friendsofaroostook.com/
