Morehouse College VISTA StrongStart Reading Program

The MCCRI VISTA, " StrongStart Reading Program” is seeking individuals interested in further refining a successful reading program, through continued development. The program is geared for 1-3 graders, who need support in reading. The VISTAS will continue to train and communicate with existing mentors, while recruiting additional mentors/volunteers, who will read with the children. Further, the VISTAS must possess excellent communication and presentation skills, must have a passion for believing that all children can learn under the right circumstances. Seeking VISTAS who have experience working in underserved Atlanta neighborhoods. Our goal, with the help of VISTAS, is to assist children in reading on grade level, so that they can stay in school, graduate from school and earn a “living wage,” and thus be lifted out of poverty. The qualities the program seeks in VISTAS are: familiarity in working with children from diverse backgrounds, VISTAS who have community-based experience and who have facility in recruiting volunteers. Other responsibilities will include: Expand recruitment data base for volunteers from businesses, non-profits and other organizations, who want to mentor children. VISTAS will develop work plans, they will research "Best Practice Reading Models," develop marketing/branding, and implement evaluation. Each VISTA will be assigned a school and will be the site coordinator for the StrongStart Reading Program at his/her respective school. Additionally, he/she will develop, newsletters, and plan workshops. The AmeriCorps VISTAS will work with community leaders, and they will give presentations to neighborhood groups.
