2015-16 Dane County Community Food Systems VISTA

The Dane County AmeriCorps*VISTA will serve as a member of the Dane County UW-Extension educator team. The VISTA will work closely with Dane County UW-Extension staff (Community Food Systems, Horticulture, Nutrition Education, Family Living, Agriculture, 4-H/Youth Development, and Community & Natural Resource Development) as well as the Community Gardens Partnership and Dane County Food Coalition to build partnerships and strengthen our community food system to increase access to healthy foods for Dane County residents, including people living in poverty.

Member Duties : Provide support and resources to community organizations and partners in our community food system in an effort to increase access to healthy food for residents in low income neighborhoods and living in poverty. 1) Assist with the coordination of the Dane County Food Coalition to bring people and organizations together to build partnerships and strengthen their ability to provide access to healthy food. 2) Organize the annual Dane County Food Summit. Recruit volunteers, facilitate meetings and communication, secure location, sponsors, speakers, manage promotion and registration, summarize evaluations and develop final report. 3) Organize educational events and other outreach efforts in community gardens in low income neighborhoods to increase access to healthy food. Serve on the Gardens Network team to plan and organize community garden and neighborhood events. Develop educational community food systems resources that can be used by volunteers and other educators.
