2015-2016 Food Security Specialist- Bad River Tribe
 
 
 
The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians is a federally recognized Indian Tribe in northern Wisconsin. The Band is located on the North shore of Lake Superior, in northern Wisconsin, Situated on 125,000 acres. The mission of the Bad River Band of Chippewa Indians is: To work toward a more progressive, financially stable government, to maintain tribal sovereignty; and enable members to progress individually, towards a more fulfilling life culturally, spiritually, and economically. Candidates must demonstrate an open interest in the culture and future of Native American community needs and goals. As well as maintain a respectful attitude for the environment and understanding of the importance of this as a tribal food security and sovereignty project. Individuals with knowledge and experience working with Native American communities are encouraged to apply. Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis.

Member Duties : The VISTA will partner with the other VISTAs, Tribal staff, and other agencies to create or expand programs focused on addressing food security. They will develop a Bad River Tribal Food Security Plan for program and community engagement as it relates to tribal food sovereignty. Some specific duties include: Development and implementation of a Food Sovereignty Assessment Tool to address organizational and community needs; Research, assess, and analyze the Chequamegon Bay Area food economy to identify and develop a local food distribution system to develop program partnerships; Work with farm-to-school and mobile farmer’s market to increase access to local producers; Develop promotional materials on the local food economy and opportunities; Develop Seed sovereignty collaborations; Coordinate education and awareness on seed sovereignty; Develop a resource libraryon food security and sovereignty issues; and Provide community workshops about healthy food behaviors.
