23 VISTA Arizona Serve - IRC Learning Associate
 
 
 
Since 1997, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Tucson has resettled more than 5,500 refugees and each year welcomes hundreds more. The IRC in Tucson has provided vital services to refugees in Tucson including employment services, medical coordination, cultural orientation, housing support, education, gardening programs and psychosocial support. Asylum-seekers often are experiencing poverty having traveled with few possessions, given up homes and land for the prospect of safety. The AmeriCorps VISTA will provide educational services to refugee children and adults to enhance integration into their new community and help provide steps towards escaping poverty. This position will work closely with the Education and Learning Case Manager, other team members and community members. **Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will work with IRC staff to increase the capacity of the education and learning department. This will include researching and partnering with other organizations that offer educational or social services that would be beneficial to refugees and asylum seekers. The VISTA will collaborate with IRC staff and volunteers to create and improve upon the English learners curriculum, as well as scheduling trial runs. The VISTA will develop metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of these curricula. Additionally, the VISTA member will facilitate the collection of information from the refugees to assess the current gaps in services for resettling refugees. This will include collecting information on current services, seeing if clients are content with services or if they need improvements. Upon collecting this information, the VISTA will spearhead the planning to implement potential solutions to any issues that arise.
