Community Food Security VISTA Project in Iowa VISTA

A number of major initiatives are underway in Waterloo, Iowa metro area and Cedar Rapids Iowa, to improve food security among vulnerable populations. University of Northern Iowa Local Food Program, Feed Iowa First, People's Community Health Clinic, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank are the leading entities collaborating to develop these initiatives and implement them. One strand of service relates to building community capacity to grow food in neighborhoods, backyards, and build self-reliance of low-income and recent immigrants, as well as build capacity for startup food/farm businesses among these populations. The other strand of service relates building the capacity of emergency food sectors to secure their own local sources of fresh produce and collaborate with local farms, while creating employment opportunities for vulnerable populations. VISTA members will be building capacity for a mobile produce stand featuring fresh veggies in several neighborhoods, featuring produce from local farms, and involving local residents, as well as helping the food bank purchase from local farms. You would learn about long term strategies towards community food security. The service opportunity is scheduled to begin in Jan 2020. The position will be open until filled.
