SPARK Early Literacy Program

The SPARK (Spheres of Proud Achievement in Reading for Kids) Program will address the following spheres of influence: •School - participants will receive targeted literacy support during the school day. •Club – participants will receive additional literacy support after-school. •Family – participants and their families will enhance literacy skills by spending time together in structured, fun activities. The program focuses on students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades that have been identified by their classroom teachers as struggling readers. By reaching children through a multi-tiered strategy that affects multiple sectors of their daily experience, the SPARK Early Literacy Program will be more effective than any one approach could be on its own. The SPARK Program is conducted at ten sites, located throughout Milwaukee’s central city. Early Literacy Instructors provide DIRECT service and implement the SPARK Program by providing one-on-one and/or small group reading instruction to students in grades K-3 during both school and club hours for 10 months. Our tutors are AmeriCorps State members who are compensated with a living allowance during their service, and an education award upon completion of their term.
