College Health Corps, People's Center Health Services

People’s Center Health Services is a safety-net health center serving low income patients in South Minneapolis, including a large population of East African immigrants and refugees. We provide a full range of preventative care, primary care, behavioral health care and dental services. Our mission is to provide affordable health care, inspire hope and promote community wellness. We are committed to addressing health disparities by providing affordable, culturally-responsive care and enabling services in a welcoming environment. The majority of our patients have low literacy rates and language barriers. They are unfamiliar with the US healthcare system and how to access healthcare, and have limited experience with preventative care, dental care, behavioral care and chronic disease management. The VISTA will Increase access to health care & knowledge of preventative, primary, behavioral and oral health care services for low-income and minority communities and increase volunteer and internship capacity of the organization. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.***

Member Duties : The VISTA will help continue the pilot of People’s Center’s new (2016-17) school-based clinic at Wellstone International High School. The school provides innovative English and content instruction for immigrant and refugee students ages 17 to 21 living in Minneapolis. Now with the help of a VISTA, students can access culturally responsive medical care on-site. Working with the Chief Operations Officer, the VISTA will develop sustainable systems for marketing the new services offered at this school clinic and increase efficiency of operations. The VISTA will also focus on increasing the community health center’s capacity to leverage volunteers by expanding the volunteer services program developed by previous VISTA. Activities will include developing new systems to train and track volunteer activities, creating volunteer positions, and communicating opportunities to local colleges.
