Indy Hunger Network Nutrition Program

Fresh Bucks is an exciting new initiative that increases access and affordability of healthy, local foods at farmers’ markets for customers paying with a SNAP EBT card (formerly called food stamps). For every dollar a SNAP recipient spends on Indiana-grown fruits and vegetables using his/her EBT card at a participating Farmers’ market, they will receive a dollar match up to $20, increasing the buying power of the individual, while increasing sales for Indiana farmers. Farmers’ markets currently planning to participate are: The Original Farmers’ Market, Indy Winters Farmers’ Market, Broad Ripple Farmers’ Market, Binford Farmers’ Market, and the Crooked Creek Farmers’ Market. The AmeriCorps VISTA will coordinate and implement the Fresh Bucks program at five participating farmers’ markets throughout Indianapolis. To ensure that the Fresh Bucks program is run smoothly and efficiently, the VISTA will be responsible for two vital parts of the program: community outreach and recording and analyzing Fresh Bucks performance at farmers’ markets. Specifically, the tasks of the VISTA will include: • organizing monthly stakeholder meetings • collecting, analyzing, and reporting weekly performance data for SNAP and Fresh Bucks’ use on specialty crop sales from all farmers’ markets • developing monthly reports for coalition partners that track and monitor progress goals • outreach that communicates the health benefits of locally-grown fruit and vegetables • executing the implementation of marketing/outreach plan • expanding Fresh Bucks to other farmers’ markets – both in Marion County and outside of it – as we seek to make Fresh Bucks a state-wide program The VISTA has the opportunity to build an extensive professional network and gain valuable professional experience, as well as assist IHN achieve its goals.
