Kinship Navigator

While extended families have always helped with child rearing, grandparents and other relatives are increasingly stepping up to care for children in our community. According to the 2012 U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 42,653 children in Washington State living with grandparents, this number has tripled since 1990. While this number only reflects grandparents it grows substantially when also including the children who live with aunts, uncles, siblings, and other relative caregivers. Most grandparents do not plan ahead to spend their retirement caring for a relative's child. Those that step up are dedicated to ensuring that child's safety. This may require a move out of senior housing to accommodate the needs of a child, or an increase in revenue. Some Kinship Caregivers are still working and need assistance finding child care. Most children enter Kinship Care due to trauma and are in need of counseling. The Kinship Support program is dedicated to ensuring Kinship Caregivers have the support, skills and resources necessary to provide safe and stable homes for the children in their care. We are seeking an AmeriCorps Vista volunteer to serve as a Kinship Navigator and assist us strengthening our Kinship Support Services. This would include helping to raise awareness, developing evaluation tools, and leveraging resources.
