2014 Eau Claire Summer Associate

Support the Eau Claire County Community Garden Programs. The Eau Claire County UW-Extension has Summer Youth Garden Programs located in neighborhoods with a high percentage of eligibility for the free or reduced school lunch program and a garden at the Bolton Refuge Transitional housing shelter for battered women and their dependent children. The Forest Street Community Garden (FSCG) is led by volunteers and managed by the City of Eau Claire Parks and Recreation Department. The FSCG grows vegetables for their members and donates portion of the harvest to the Community Table, an organization that serves a daily meal to those in need. The garden is located near the same neighborhood with the Summer Youth Garden Programs having one of the highest numbers of students eligible for free or reduced school lunches in Eau Claire. Individuals in these garden programs are taught nutrition and gardening skills. It is the hope that these new skills will empower children and adults to grow vegetables and also to eat healthier. To increase food security, families at Bolton Refuge House can take the produce from the garden and are taught cooking classes with those vegetables.
