*2014 Jackson County 4-H Summer Community Outreach
 
 
 
Mission: AmeriCorps*VISTA in Jackson County will, with community partners and adult volunteers, engage youth in creative, research-based youth development programs designed to develop skills that support improved academic performance, healthy lifestyle choices, and life transitions to college and the workforce. Audience served: Elementary school age youth and teen leaders in Jackson County, Wisconsin. This rural county in western Wisconsin has a total population of 20,449 with an overall poverty rate of 16.4%. Children are disproportionately affected by this with over 50% of youth participating in the free or reduced lunch program. Native Americans make up 6.2% of the county’s overall population. Program highlights: During the summer, the AmeriCorps VISTA will bring 4-H opportunities to the Jackson County community. The individual will work closely with a number of partners including Jackson County 4-H, Spaulding Road Community Garden, Boys & Girls Club of Jackson County, the Ho-Chunk Nation, and Black River Falls Public Library, leading hands-on 4-H programming with the youth. Outreach to socially, economically, and ethnically diverse youth will be a key component of programming.

Member Duties : 1) Lead community-wide youth programming related to the 4-H Summer of Science, including: a. Developing and leading regular educational programs that incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into a variety of project areas. b. Supporting Boys & Girls Club and other community youth involvement in STEM-themed activities. c. Build partnerships for the delivery of STEM-themed activities. 2) Coordinate activities of the Jackson County 4-H Recycling Committees and incorporate STEM into their efforts. 3) Take a lead role in incorporating STEM into existing events like summer camp, Cloverbud Camp, and the Jackson County Fair.
