Youth risk behavior is a prevalent force in Ravalli County. The Montana Prevention Needs Assessment Survey Results for 2016 show that 46.6% of Ravalli County youth have at least 9 or more risk factors operating in their lives, classifying them as “high risk” youth. Ravalli County has a juvenile offense rate of 6%, with a 13.3% recidivism rate according to the Ravalli County Youth Court Services 2016 annual report. Teen drug and alcohol abuse rates in Montana are among the highest in the nation, according to the 2016 Montana Kids Count. The correlation between risk behaviors and poverty is high, with 27% of Ravalli County’s children living below the federal poverty line, according to the 2016 Montana Kids Count. Many factors contribute to on-going rural poverty and associated issues in Ravalli County, including juvenile delinquency, on-going risk behaviors, youth depression, and the financial, social, and emotional costs of living in poverty.
