* PRC – Area IV Agency on Aging Senior Medicare Patrol

Over $70 million is lost each year in Montana due to waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare. A barrier exists in meeting the needs in the communities within rural counties across Montana due to the distance, and therefore isolation, of the rural areas. Area IV Agency on Aging will continue, in partnership with the Montana SMP Program, to strengthen efforts to educate and empower seniors in the fight against healthcare fraud in order to save veterans, their families, and low-income people on Medicare and Medicaid money. The overall goal is to expand the MT SMP’s long-term capacity for recruiting and retaining volunteers in rural areas, gaining new volunteers to serve as leaders to help better serve the public and connect with the community more effectively. Increasing our efforts to prevent or report healthcare fraud, errors and abuse by increasing the volunteer capacity in underserved rural areas, we will ensure a healthy future to 200 veterans as well as an additional 200 family members of veterans. By educating and assisting veterans and their family members on how to read and understand their medical statements, we will show they are less likely to pay a bill they don’t understand, resulting in cost avoidance which can often make the difference between being able to afford rent or prescriptions or not.
