* PRC - Hopa Mountain

Across Montana, many rural and tribal teens are disconnected from resources for academic success. An article in the New York Times reported that as of 2014, less than 30% of students in the bottom quarter of incomes enroll in a 4 year school college. Among that group, less than 50% graduate. These students are 7 times more likely to drop out of school once they reach age 16 than their middle- and upper-class counterparts. In Montana specifically, the findings from a 2013 College Access Gap Analysis show that there is a lack of awareness of college access services available. The VISTA project will move low-income youth out of poverty by connecting them to resources for the college application process — as well as connecting them to resources for success once they are in college — resulting in increased awareness of college access services available, and a stronger academic support network for low income rural and tribal students.

Member Duties : The VISTA will identify the student groups in low-income communities that are the most disconnected from the opportunities available to them. The VISTA will establish partnerships through which Hopa Mountain can serve these teens. The VISTA will also compile a comprehensive database of resources available to these teens to help connect them to internships, scholarships, and other opportunities. The VISTA will conduct research and analyze data collected through Hopa Mountain’s Indigenous Scholars of Promise (ISP) program to identify gaps in service and expand access to the ISP program to better serve low income youth across the state in both rural and tribal communities.
