* PRC - East Helena Public Schools, Suicide Prevention

Stigma, isolation, and lack of access to healthcare resources in the town of East Helena impact overall behavior health of the community. 50 percent of students fall at or below the poverty level in East Helena, and the school district is experiencing an extremely high rate of youth suicides. In the last six years, five students that had previously attended the East Helena Public Schools have tragically taken their lives in suicide. The suicide rate in East Helena schools is five times higher than all other Helena area students. The suicides have all come during the junior year of high school while attending Helena High School.

Member Duties : The VISTA will develop supports for students in the East Helena School District to help cope with stress and challenges that will develop healthy, resilient students, and reduce the risk of suicide. The VISTA will finalize the community action plan. This plan includes collecting data and pulling community stakeholders together to identify interventions to lessen the risk of mental health issues and incidences of suicide among students. The VISTA will identify and report on barriers to services as a result of the high levels of poverty in the community. The VISTA will work on moving the coalitions and work groups created to sustainability by creating coalition roles and expectations. The VISTA Member will create evaluations to allow the coalition and VISTA project to become more data-driven. Grant opportunities will also be sought out to help ensure adequate ongoing funding for the suicide prevention efforts.
