* PRC - Helena 6th Ward Garden Park

In the City of Helena, currently 1 out of every 7 adults, and 1 out of every 5 children, are considered “food insecure”, which means that many families are “without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food” in the community. The 6th Ward Garden Park is located in an economically distressed area of Helena, known as the 6th Ward neighborhood. A majority of the students who attend the two closest elementary schools in the area qualify for Title II assistance. Bryant Elementary operates the Community Eligibility Provision school meal program, which means that every student is eligible to receive free school meals, and approximately 50% of the students at Central Elementary qualify for either free or reduced-price school meals, demonstrating a significant need for additional resources to combat food insecurity. While the 6th Ward neighborhood is in close proximity to downtown, new urban center developments and city parks, it remains semi-isolated due to a major traffic corridor through the city and a large number of EPA Brownsfields sites. The City recently established an urban renewal district and tax increment financing program for the area to “enhance and promote the vitality, growth, historic significance and walkability” of the area.

Member Duties : The VISTA will help low income individuals and families build healthy futures by engaging the community in a multidisciplinary approach for this innovative garden park. The VISTA will build capacity by seeking out new community partners, by continuing to develop the volunteer program, and by continuing to build a sustainable community coalition to ensure the park’s long-term management and success. The coalition will become the social and management structure needed to further implement the long-term project goals and sustainability of the park to better support food security in the 6th Ward neighborhood.
