AFVN University of Miami Changing Neighborhoods Coordinator

Through the focus on affordable housing and inclusive community development, the University of Miami CCE has developed the Miami Housing Solutions Lab (MHSL), a suite of free, publicly accessible mapping tools designed to provide data-rich resources about affordable housing in the Miami metro region. According to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, the Miami metro area is home to the highest percentage of renters spending more than half of their incomes on housing costs in the country and the largest share of severely burdened renters. A recent report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition revealed that South Florida has one of the most severe shortages of rental housing for extremely low-income households, with 22 homes available for every 100 households. In 2023-2024, the University of Miami’s Office of Civic & Community Engagement (CCE) will continue to focus on the Affordable Housing Initiative and seek to build sustainability for the projects, partnerships, and initiatives based in underserved neighborhoods of Miami that the CCE has developed over the last decade. CCE works to support sensitive development in historic neighborhoods, including preserving and honoring local history, developing job and economic opportunities, and meeting affordable housing needs. UM CCE also works to harness and share data to engage with policy makers, planners, developers, community organizations, and scholars of urban issues to build capacity and study local housing and economic development issues. CCE continues to compile various sources of data to aggregate into publicly accessible mapping platforms and policy best practices on the Miami Housing Solutions Lab, which highlights the areas of greatest need for affordable housing within Miami-Dade County. The Changing Neighborhoods & Gentrification project will continue to create visualizations based on the gathered data from the Miami Housing Solutions Lab to share with community stakeholders.
