Feerick Center Access to Justice Initiative

The Access to Justice Initiative (AJI) at Fordham Law School’s Feerick Center for Social Justice (FC) aims to expand the capacity of FC and partner organizations to promote the rights and address the problems facing marginalized and low-income New Yorkers. FC is committed to recruiting and retaining a team from different cultures, races, educational backgrounds, life experiences, socio-economic classes, sexual orientations, ages, genders, and abilities, especially team members from groups that have historically been underrepresented in professional workplaces. The VISTA Leader provides programmatic support to 3 projects. Our projects work with volunteer attorneys who provide civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers with unmet legal service needs. The first project is the NYS Attorney Emeritus Program, a statewide initiative to engage senior attorneys in civil pro bono service through a network of 65+ legal services organizations. The FC co-administers the AEP with the NYS Courts. The second project is the FC CLARO Program, which recruits volunteers to help unrepresented New Yorkers with debt collection cases in Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island Civil Courts navigate the court process. The third project is FC’s Immigrant Justice Project, which recruits volunteers to help respond to the influx of new migrants in New York City, New York State, and the border. You will gain broad exposure to the NYC/NYS legal community, including the courts, the organized bar, pro bono providers, and legal services organizations. This is an ideal opportunity for professional growth at a premier law school located in midtown Manhattan. VISTAs must live within commuting distance (1.5 hrs) of NYC before their service start date. This position employs a hybrid model with at least 3 days in the office at Fordham Law School (subject to change). Please check the eligibility requirements for VISTA Leaders, which include 1 year of prior service through approved AmeriCorps programs.
