WSU VISTA - SCDDO Community Liaison

The Sedgwick County Developmental Disability Organization (SCDDO) is the single point of entry to community based services for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). Meaning that families and individuals have one place they go to be determined eligible for services and to receive information/referral to access needed supports. By State law, SCDDO has a role in capacity building; developing new types of community services, driving quality assurance, and ensuring services meet the individual’s needs. These critical functions aim to improve the quality of life and independence for those living with IDD. The Workforce Development VISTA will build capacity by supporting the implementation of a new, innovative registered apprenticeship program for Kansas. This new program will help ensure that Sedgwick County has a robust, highly qualified workforce to support the needs of people with IDD. Sedgwick County is in the heart of the country and is located in south-central Kansas. Our County is one of the most populous of Kansas’ 105 counties with a population estimated at more than 521,000 persons. SCDDO is located in Wichita, the county seat. Wichita has evolved into a cultural and entertainment center. The downtown district offers restaurants, retail shops, museums and parks. Wichita has more than 9 colleges and universities, including Wichita State University where upwards of 15,000 on-campus and commuter students attend. Wichita has ranked 8th on the list of the 10 best value cities; 23 of 102 major markets for small-business vitality and the commute times are the lowest among the 100 major metropolitan markets. Wichita has also been designated an "All-American City" four times. Major highways, including the Kansas Turnpike, US 400 and Interstate I-135, link Wichita with a number of larger cities such as Denver to the west, Kansas City to the northeast, Oklahoma City to the south and Tulsa to the southeast.
