2015-2016 Centro Hispano-CAMINOS 2.0 Career Pathways

In the midst of one of the most cultural diverse neighborhoods in Madison, you will find Centro Hispano, one of the largest non-profits serving the ever changing Latino community for more than 30 years. Centro's goal is to improve the quality of life for Latinos and others living in Dane County by empowering youth, strengthening families, and engaging the community. Since 2012, Centro Hispano in partnership with Madison Technical College and Latino Academy have worked to provide integrated training in the area of healthcare to low-income Latinos and other ESL adults in the greater Madison area. CAMINOS 2.0 is an expansion effort and intends to continue working on increasing the number of Certified Nursing Assistants of color in Madison and beyond. Our program's stories are evidence of its success, and our outcomes range from students earning more money, working for only one employer, to going back to school to complete a nursing degree. At the end of the day, CAMINOS 2.0 offers an education and employment ticket to improve the life of many families in our community. Specifically, CAMINOS 2.0 Career Pathways VISTA program aims to expand its education opportunities for its alumni and current students, by partnering with UW-Hospital as the main employer. This partnership represents win-win for both parties: our program can offer a solid career track to our students and the hospital will be able to recruit not only qualify CNAs, but also increase the cultural diversity in their workforce. The palpable need to train, hire, and maintain health care providers of color has been a struggle for employers, and this gap is amplified by the low numbers of student of color entering health care careers. CAMINOS 2.0 is a great example of an innovating and "out-side of the box" approach, which is trying to bridge some of existent gaps in the health care educational setting and workforce fields.

Member Duties : Working with one of our Career Specialist, the VISTA will assist in conducting literature reviews about best practices related to higher education approaches for ESL students and will facilitate interviews and focus groups with past and current graduates, employers, and academic staff to gather information about their thoughts and recommendations for the program. By creatively and thoughtfully improving this program, the VISTA will help ensure that ESL students in Dane County have access to education that will enable them to attain employment in family-supporting careers.
