Climate Change & Energy Planner VISTA Member

The goal of this project is to assist the Nez Perce Tribe and tribal staff in climate adaptation, policy, and resilience planning efforts. The two primary areas where assistance is needed is in capacity development for renewable energy projects and for food resilience. The Tribe has a Climate Change and Energy Subcommittee that is committed to sustainable development in a way that mitigates for climate change. Food and economic insecurity in rural parts of the Interior Columbia River Basin are a pressing current need for tribal and non-tribal members. The tribe is working on developing alternative energy/transportation projects that reduce the cost of energy for residents and the carbon footprint of the Tribe, and provide training opportunities and business opportunities. In addition, the tribe is considering a number of food production options, from community based gardening, to small cottage industries, to commercial production. Tribal council frequently requests information from the climate change program regarding their enterprises and initiatives, and assistance preparing comment letters on state, tribal, and federal policy regarding green economic issues and climate change. We are requesting a VISTA members assistance to help the Climate Change Program, based in the Water Resources Division under Natural Resources, to meet the needs of the Tribal Council while working on ongoing projects.
