Washburn University/Mulvane Art Museum

The Mulvane Art Museum, located on the Washburn University campus, is a regional, collecting art museum that is accredited by the American Alliance of Museum. The Museum provides exposure to the arts to people for all ages through exhibitions and educational programs. We are dedicated to providing outreach programs in schools, community centers, and cultural sites and our initiatives integrate the arts into traditional curricula as part of a growing effort to connect science and technology with innovative thinking. Eighty-nine percent of participants in outreach programs are from low-income families. Admission to the Museum is free and outreach programs are provided free of charge; the Museum often provides an allowance to schools so they may bring students to the Museum for on-site tours and activities. Research reveals that when young people from at-risk populations study the arts they show heightened academic standing, a strong capacity for self-assessment, and a secure sense of their own ability to plan and work for a positive future. Researchers from Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA and UConn reporting in Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning found that arts education can enhance academic achievement, reach students on the margins of the educational system, create an effective learning environment, and connect learners’ experiences to the world outside of school. Multiple studies cite strong positive impacts across socioeconomic groups with respect to both academic and personal success. VISTA will strengthen the Mulvane’s capacity to create a sustainable foundation for outreach programs.
