Capacity Development Specialist [MCN]

All Square is a nonprofit social enterprise centered on a craft grilled cheese restaurant and professional development institute. Our mission is to end recidivism while ensuring that those impacted by the criminal justice system have the support and opportunities they need to become our nation’s future leaders, business owners, and legal practitioners. Here’s why: Nearly 100 million Americans, and 1 in 4 Minnesotans, have a criminal record. The existence of such a record, regardless of its age, relevance, or accuracy, prevents individuals from accessing the fundamental aspects of a productive life: employment, housing, credit, insurance, and education. We believe that this exclusion is also the primary cause of Minnesota’s soaring recidivism rates, which are currently the worst in the country. In this state alone, 61% of released offenders return to prison within three years. Our formerly incarcerated community needs support and warrants meaningful opportunities, and All Square was founded to provide just that. All Square’s formerly incarcerated staff and Board members were instrumental in the initial design of our reentry model—particularly through the programmatic lens. Those who have experienced the barriers we are seeking to remedy have played critical roles in shaping our legal, financial, and entrepreneurial modules. We have also centered our model on mental health, which was a specific requirement from our founding (impacted) Board members. Our most recent efforts have focused on innovating beyond our programmatic elements and working to create a holistic, stable, equity centered experience that addresses Fellows’ core concerns and opens avenues traditionally restricted to higher wage earners: paid parental leave, zero interest loans, benefit options, access to bulk purchasing staples through our co-op, and restorative personnel policies that focus on aiding and improving decision making skills.
