IDPH AmeriCorps Substance Abuse Prevention Program
 
 
 
Club M is a youth mentoring program taking place within Burlington Community School District (BCSD) in the High School located at 421 Terrace Avenue, Burlington, Iowa. The program matches BCSD elementary students one-to-one with a Burlington high school student for an hour of friendship, board games, craft making, or recreation activities. The high school student is matched with the elementary student based on personality types, interests, and hobbies. Throughout the school year, the mentoring match spends an hour a week together every Wednesday in the high school cafeteria. Club M will engage one AmeriCorps members to serve between November 1, 2017 through October 31, 2018 at Burlington High School. The AmeriCorps member will assist the Club M Coordinator to help sustain the mentoring program past its first year, recruitment of BHS student mentors, recruitment and support of elementary student participants, finalize the design a Club M handbook ensuring the program meets National benchmarks for peer mentoring programs, and introduce Substance Abuse Prevention programming in Club M. The AmeriCorps member will be an integral part of Club M at BHS providing support for the matches and implementing prevention programming to both elementary and high school student matches.

Member Duties : Recruit BHS volunteer mentors ensuring they understand their commitment to an elementary student. Support active mentoring matches including monthly contact with mentee’s parents, mentor volunteers, and school day staff. Recruit community mentors and conduct outreach to local service groups, businesses, and other organizations to create awareness about the benefits of youth mentoring and to recruit mentor volunteers. Train all new recruited mentor volunteers with the two-hour initial mentor training booklet designed for Club M’s program including the role of a mentor, Club M expectations, how to build relationships with students, and how to be a positive role model to an elementary student mentee. Disseminate pre- and post- mentor and mentee surveys as needed to evaluate program effectiveness and match relationships strength. Collaborate with BHS staff to create and implement substance abuse prevention programming and presentations.
